What is the Mazor X surgical robot?

The Medtronic Mazor X Stealth Edition robot consists of a robotic platform with a workstation and a robotic arm that enable surgical planning and guidance during the operation.

It offers improved precision and efficiency in the placement of spinal implants, reducing the risk of complications. In addition, it guarantees a minimally invasive surgery to allow the patient swifter recoveryDr. Pablo Clavel, Director of Instituto Clavel, and a practicing neurosurgeon with more than 20 years of experience in spinal surgery, explains more about the robot in this video.

What spinal pathologies is Mazor X surgery used for?

Some spinal pathologies do not improve with conservative treatments, making surgery necessary to restore the patient’s quality of life. Following is a list of some of the pathologies that can benefit from surgery with the Mazor X robot:

  • Scoliosis: surgery to correct the scoliotic segment
  • Degenerative pathology of the dorsal spine, due to either trauma or tumor: arthrodesis
  • Degenerative pathology of the lumbar spine, due to either trauma or tumor: arthrodesis
  • Vertebral fractures: kyphoplasty and lumbar interbody fusion
  • Tumors of the spine: vetebral biopsy

What benefits does Mazor X offer the patient?

The Medtronic X Stealth Edition robot provides the patient with various benefits, both during the surgery and after, in the postoperative period. These combined benefits represent a great leap forward for spinal surgery:

  • Increases precision. According to studies performed, it increases precision of implant placement up to 98.7% (without deviation).
  • Facilitates minimally invasive surgery, meaning the surgical incision is smaller and there is less bleeding.
  • Reduces exposure to ionizing radiation during the operation, because the surgery takes less time than in conventional surgeries.
  • Risk of infection is also reduced because less time is needed in the operating room.
  • Minimizes postoperative pain thanks to the robotic arm, which can work in deep tissues with less muscle retraction.
  • Reduces the risk of complications in the adjacent segment of the spine.

How is Mazor X spine surgery performed?

The surgical process using the Mazor X robotic system is as follows:

  • At the robotic workstation, the surgeon plans the trajectory of the implants, using the patient’s CT images taken prior to surgery.
  • The patient is placed on the operating table.
  • The robot is securely anchored to the table and the patient.
  • The robotic arm begins taking and recording images of the patient. Each vertebral body is registered independently.
  • The Mazor X system analyzes and matches images taken in different modalities. It can match a preoperative CT scan with intraoperative fluoroscopy or 3D surgical images, including images captured at different times and in different anatomical planes.
  • The system software guides the robotic arm, following the plan made by the surgeon.
  • The surgeon places the implants using the real time neuronavigation system and guided by the Mazor X robotic arm.
