An innovative treatment to alleviate Parkinson's symptoms

Although there is no cure as yet for Parkinson's disease, thanks to ongoing progress in medicine there are ways to treat its symptoms and improve the patient's quality of life. One example of this is electrical stimulation, an innovative treatment we use at Instituto Clavel with highly effective results. In this article, we'll tell you about it

Parkinson's disease is very common. It is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder that causes deterioration of parts of the brain and mainly affects motor function.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Movement Disorder Society, it is estimated that around 6 million people worldwide suffer from Parkinson’s. In addition, it ranks as the most common motor brain disease and the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's.

The causes of Parkinson’s disease are unknown, however, we do know that the risk of developing it increases with age, and the main symptoms are tremor at rest, muscle rigidity, difficulty with movements, balance and posture problems, sleep disorders, changes in cognitive function, urinary incontinence...

A Revolutionary Treatment for Relieving the Symptoms

At the Brain Unit in Instituto Clavel, we are taking the lead with a revolutionary new treatment for Parkinson's patients that consists of the application of non-invasive transcranial electrical stimulation

In this non-invasive treatment, the patient is fitted with a cap with electrodes that are strategically placed to stimulate specific areas of the brain.

The goal of this treatment is to relieve symptoms commonly associated with the cognitive problems associated with Parkinson's disease, such as anxiety, depression, or pain.

When this treatment is combined with Instituto Clavel's current therapeutic approaches, it offers great benefits for patients: it is highly effective, minimally invasive, and has little financial cost.

According to Dr. Gabriel Salazar, neurologist at Instituto Clavel, this innovative treatment "has shown remarkable results in improving the most disabling symptoms of Parkinson's disease. With daily sessions of approximately 20 minutes over a period of 20 consecutive days, patients experience significant relief from sleep disorders, depression, anxiety, impulse control disorders, and mild cognitive impairment."

Unlike traditional treatments, this method offers promising results without the need for surgical intervention, such as deep brain stimulation, and without depending exclusively on medications.

Patient trials

At Instituto Clavel’s Brain Unit, inaugurated in 2023, we have treated various pathologies included in the subspecialty of movement disorders.

Thanks to our experience, we have been able to make progress in the treatment of Parkinson’s patients by using Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for patients at early stages (early stimulation). The result has been a clear improvement in their quality of life and a huge reduction in the need for medications that caused serious behavioral problems.

In addition, we follow up with these patients by telematic means using Boston Scientific's Heart Connect system, a step forward in patient care in which we have been pioneers with a transoceanic online follow-up with Paraguay.

Another pathology we have treated is drug-resistant tremor, successfully eliminating tremor in all the patients by applying high-frequency ultrasound.

At the same time, we have treated patients with dystonia and essential tremor by applying ultrasound-guided botulinum toxin infiltrations, a practice used in very few places in Spain.

We also have extensive experience in performing nerve blocks for headache, migraine, and neck pain, as well experience in diagnosis of atypical neurodegenerative diseases.

At Instituto Clavel’s Brain Unit, we offer personalized treatment for a variety of brain pathologies.

If you would like a professional evaluation, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We will be happy to answer all your questions.

Understanding Juvenile Parkinson’s Disease: Symptoms and Treatments

When Parkinson's disease is diagnosed in patients under the age of 21, it is referred to as juvenile Parkinson’s disease (JPD), and when the onset occurs between the ages of 21 and 40, it is referred to as early-onset Parkinson's or young-onset Parkinson's. Although the symptoms are mostly the same at any age, younger people often experience the disease differently because of their unique life circumstances.
