The importance of early detection in neurological diseases and pathologies of the spine

Early detection of neurological diseases, and correct monitoring of spinal pathologies, are key to preventing later complications. Consulting a specialist and getting an early diagnosis can make the difference between successful treatment and permanent disability or deficit.

‌Why is early detection of neurological diseases so important?

Early diagnosis is a decisive factor for successful treatment of neurological and spinal pathologies. When neurological diseases are detected early, steps can be taken before symptoms worsen, avoiding the need for more complex treatments that could have permanent secondary effects. In the case of neurological pathologies, early detection can make the difference between retaining neurological functions or living with long-term complications.

We know from our experience working with patients in countries like Ethiopia and Kenya, that even the context of very limited resources, the most efficient healthcare systems are those that can provide early detection of brain tumors or spinal cord compressions.

‌When does a spinal pathology require periodic monitoring?

Preventive medical tests are not always necessary. In spinal pathologies, especially degenerative ones, imaging studies are not recommended if the patient has no noticeable symptoms. Some spinal pathologies, such as degeneration of the intervertebral discs or changes in vertebral alignment, are usually just part of the normal aging process. Regular medical monitoring would only be needed if the patient notices weakness, tingling, or persistent pain.

‌Signs that indicate you need to see a specialist

Some neurological symptoms are warning signs indicating that you do need to see a doctor, and it’s important to recognize them. Some examples are:

  • Headaches that persist despite pain relief medication, and are accompanied by nausea or vomiting or altered vision.
  • Radiating pain from the neck or lower back to the arms or legs.
  • Weakness or loss of sphincter control - these two require immediate medical attention.

In these cases, early action can prevent permanent damage. For example, when a herniated disc causes weakness in one of the legs, it needs surgery within the first 48 hours to prevent serious damage.

‌Early detection of neurological pathologies

Some brain diseases progress slowly, and their symptoms might go unnoticed at first. For example, a patient with a frontal lobe tumor may become apathetic or have mood swings. And in pathologies such as epilepsy, or a degenerative disease such as Parkinson’s, there may be an optimal time to consider surgical intervention. In all these cases, an early diagnosis can improve the patient's outcome and quality of life.

‌Healthcare resources in Spain

Fortunately, in both the public and private healthcare systems in Spain, we have the resources needed to quickly get diagnostic imaging tests and safely perform urgent or time-sensitive surgeries.

However, getting the most accurate diagnosis requires more than technology. A physical examination of the patient and evaluation of the patient’s complete medical history are essential. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are very helpful, and are becoming increasingly more useful, but they are not a substitute for the clinical judgment of an experienced specialist.
